Helping women scientists reach their full potential since 2019

Our vision is to increase the number of women scientists in Japan. Japan currently ranks 116th out of 156 countries for gender equality, according to the World Economic Forum in 2022. Furthermore, only 1 in 7 Japanese scientists are women, ranking the lowest in all OECD nations.

To help achieve our vision of gender equality in the sciences, Women In Science Japan (WISJ) provides skill-building opportunities and a dynamic professional network for those pursuing careers in STEM.

Events we host

  • Professional development events 3-4x per year, both online and in Tokyo, that offer new insights and skills on topics chosen by our members.

  • Short to medium-term programs, such as our twice-monthly book club, that provide in-depth conversations on gender, science, and life in Japan.

  • Casual gatherings, such as brunch or hikes, where members and their families can simply have fun and connect with one another.

Our community

  • Academics serving as post-docs, researchers, or professors at institutions in Japan

  • STEM practitioners working at corporations or start-ups as scientists, engineers, or consultants

  • University students, both undergraduate and graduate students, that are just starting their STEM career in Japan

WISJ welcomes STEM practitioners of all educational backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, races, and nationalities.
