What does it mean to be an inclusive leader in Japan?

Reflections from Women in Science Japan’s (WISJ) first book club.

At the beginning of this year, we launched our first book club. The goals of our book club are to:

  1. educate ourselves on issues relevant to our organization’s mission, and

  2. build a richer sense of community among WISJ members.

After conducting a survey on possible books to read, ranging from fiction set in Japan to non-fiction titles on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), we selected “How to Be an Inclusive Leader, Second Edition: Your Role in Creating Cultures of Belonging Where Everyone Can Thrive” by Jennifer Brown.

Every two to three weeks, book club members met to discuss the most recent chapter of the book. Participants included university students, industry scientists, and academic faculty of a wide range of disciplines. Each chapter of “How to Be an Inclusive Leader” featured discussion questions which served as a jumping-off point for each book club session.
