WISJ x Le Wagon Tokyo Roast your Resume Event

On July 13th 2022, Women in Science Japan co-hosted a Roast your Résumé session with Le Wagon Tokyo coding bootcamp. The aim of the session was to get expert advice from recruiters on how to best construct a résumé or curriculum vitae (“CV”) to land an interview.

We had several people submit the résumés for roasting, mostly graduate students or recent graduates looking for research or work opportunities in the STEM industry. Olivia Li, Principal Consultant for Pharmaceuticals at Robert Walters Japan, and Gloria Ting, Talent Acquisition Partner at Flatiron Health were our résumé roasters. These fabulous women both gave excellent and personalized feedback for each person who submitted a résumé!

Some general tips we all took home:

  • Put the education section at the top of your résumé.

  • One-pager résumés are more common in the United States, but 2-3 pages are acceptable for international jobs in Japan.

  • Cater your skills and experience to the job description: avoid making your interests and skill sets seem ambiguous.

  • It is not necessary to put your address on your résumé; phone number and email should suffice.

  • …and much more!

Thank you so much to all the brave and talented people who submitted their impressive CV’s, to Gloria and Olivia for their expert advice, Chieri at Le Wagon Tokyo for marketing and photos, and of course to Sasha from Le Wagon Tokyo who MC’ed the night away.

Given the success of the event, we hope to host a similar Roast your Résumé event in the future, so if you’re based in Tokyo, follow us on Instagram or Facebook to get the update!
